Description:
One of the fastest growing Oak species, growing up to 61cm per year, it is not tolerant of alkaline soils. The Pin Oak is also known as the swamp oak as it thrives in damp conditions. The name pin Oak, is considered to possibly come from its historical use where wooden pins were sometimes made for the construction of wooden buildings. It has an interesting habit in that as it gets older its lower branches tend to grow downwards. As this tree grows relatively fast it has a shorter lifespan than our native Oak this being typical of faster growing trees generally. This tree is categorised as H6 in terms of its hardiness -15 to -20.
