CATTON ARBORETUM

Sequoia sempervirens

Common name: Coastal Redwood

Year planted: 1996

Country of origin: US from Oregon to central California

Year introduced: William Lobb brought seeds to England in 1853

Description: The worlds tallest trees at up to 110m tall. and long lived, possibly for 2000 plus years. The reddish brown bark is fibrous and spongy with soft vertical ridges and furrows which also gives it some resistance to forest fires. Fires actually help the its cones to open and disperse their seeds. The wood is of high quality. This particular specimen has lost its main growing point several time due I think to the cold west winds in the winter at this site
