CATTON ARBORETUM

Taxodium distichum

Common name: Swamp Cypress

Year planted: 1996

Country of origin: USA from Texas to New Jersey

Year introduced: Came to UK around 1640

Description: Tended to be found in river basins due to its tolerance of wet conditions. In very wet conditions the roots will produce vertical knees which rise above the soil and water level. Will also grow well in drier situations. Can grow to 30m tall in the wild. Has soft pale green needles which turn golden brown before falling. Initially used in the US for housebuilding and furniture as the wood is easy to work and durable. This particular specimen grew well initially but then lost its main growing point and has developed a pendula shape.
